Introduction

Tribhuvan University Library Science Students’ Alumni Association (TULSSAA)

Library education within Nepal prior to 1995 A.D. was merely a daydream. It was “the dream comes true” for library students when Tribhuvan University set up the Central Department of Library and Information Science in 1995AD. At Kirtipur, University Campus Department offered the Bachelor of Library and Information Science program, a one-year academic course in the same-year. The first batch of Bachelor of Library Science (BLibSc) passed out in 1996 AD.

It took two years for them to feel the necessity to unite among themselves. By the time two more subsequent batches of such degree holders had come out. Well, in 1999, the first batch graduates took the initiative and established Tribhuvan University Library Science Students’ Alumni Association. Even since the alumni association is acronymic ally known as TULSSAA. It is registered with the Kathmandu CDO office as non-governmental, non-partisan and non-for profit organization.

However it has played a significant role in uniting LIS professionals in Nepal. It performs recommendable work by creating good relationships between TULSSAA members by uniting them through various notable programs. Until the date it has more than hundred members of TULSSAA as LIS professionals. It also performs various jobs to create friendly and harmonious relations with other organizations and persons related to the LIS profession. In all new enrollment of the academic year it welcomes new students of TU, Library and Information Science. TULSSAA is organizing time to time workshops, seminars, discussion groups, etc. in order to provide public forums for professional advancement in Nepal. It organizes various programs  like picnics, tours, get-togethers, rendezvous, etc. to unite all the members and  provides an opportunity to mix up with each other and share their views, news etc.

TULSSAA is actively participating and working from the beginning for the success of Library Day in Nepal.

Previously TULSSAA Journal has played a great role, when there was rarely publication about Library literature in Nepal. As we earlier mentioned that it is the only one standard professional journal of Library and Information Science published from Nepal so far. It has tried to fill some bricks in library literature in Nepal. However it was discontinued for some couple of years and good news is that in 2019, Vol. 11, No. 1, Issue No. 14 is published. TULSSAA has worked to fulfill the lack of Semi-professional manpower. Till date TULSSAA has conducted Level III LIS training for 15 batches and more than 350 participants have benefited from it. Along with this TULSSAA is conducting short term training for professionals too.
